College/Career Event Set at Campbell Elementary School
CAMPBELL, Ohio -- The Eastern Ohio P-16 Partnership for Education will host a college/career event tonight at Campbell Elementary School here. The event, open to all Mahoning County families, will feature representatives from area colleges and universities and local businesses.
Speakers will address academic and financial college/career preparation, officials said. The event will take place from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
At the event, the P-16 partnership will announce a new free online ACT training program, and parents will learn more about how their children can obtain college credit while still in high school.
The partnership was awarded a $10,000 grant from the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley and a matching grant from The Kresge Foundation. The grants will be used to fund this program, which is designed to increase the number of people in the Youngstown-Warren area with college degrees. Youngstown is one of 57 cities nationwide in a "Talent Dividend Prize" competition vying for a $1 million prize for the city that achieves the greatest increase in the number of college degrees awarded by 2014. The prize-winning city will use the $1 million toward a national promotional campaign centered on the city’s talent development.
Participants at tonight's event include Youngstown State University, Kent State University Trumbull, Eastern Gateway Community College, National College, Mahoning Career & Technical Center, Trumbull Career & Technical Center, Seven Seventeen Credit Union, and the Northeast Ohio Council on Higher Education. Subjects to be discussed include College in High School; You’ve Graduated, Now What?, Life After High School, Financial Planning and How to Save. Representatives will be available for one-on-one conversations with participating families.
Refreshments will be served, and parents or guardians in attendance will be eligible to win an Apple iPad 2. For more information, call (330) 675-7624.
