7 Days of STEM Schedule Available Online
YOUNGSTOWN -- The community’s first regional science and technology festival, 7 Days of STEM, takes place the week of Sept. 15 with a full range of events now posted online at OHWOWKids.org/7-days-of-stem.
The seven-day celebration of STEM – science, technology, engineering and mathmatics -- education will be hosted at numerous venues, with various participating institutions, organizations and businesses.
Among the newly scheduled events is a lecture at Sept. 16 by Tom Serienko, chief of Ohio’s Geological Survey and Ohio’s 13 state geologist. Serenko will appear at Youngstown State Univesity’s Moser Hall. His talk begins at 6 p.m. Another event now listed on the website takes place Sept. 20 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Semple Building, 242 W. Federal St., where AST2 will offer hands-on activities with 3-D printers.
Oh Wow! The Roger & Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science & Technology is powering the festival with assistance from participating partners and sponsors. The center received a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation’s Program in Public Understanding of Science and Technology.
“Youngstown was one of 11 sites selected by the Sloan Foundation,” said Katie Seminara, assistant manager of OH WOW! “Our planning team looks forward to the opportunity to showcase the many organizations, institutions, and individuals working to generate excitement in STEM education for learners of all ages.”
Events are designated family, teen, and/or adult, and will cover an assortment of STEM related topics, culminating in the return of Silly Science Sunday Sept. 21.
“This festival offers events and exhibits for everyone,” said festival committee member Alexa Sweeney-Blackann. “We are fortunate that our community can offer a full week of STEM events, and we hope families and individuals take advantage of this unique cultural experience.”
