National Unemployment Rate Falls to 6.3% in April
WASHINGTON – The U.S. unemployment rate fell to 6.3% in April, down from 6.7% in for the prior two months, as nonfarm payroll employment rose by 288,000 during the month, the U.S. Department of Labor reported this morning. Unemployment was 7.5 percent in April 2013.
Monthly job gains have averaged 238,000 over the past three months, taking into account revisions for February and March, which increased total nonfarm employment by 36,000 on net. In the 12 months prior to April, employment growth averaged 190,000 per month.
Job gains in April were widespread, sled by employment growth in professional and business services, retail trade, food services and drinking places, and construction, Erica Groshen, commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, reported. Employment in professional and business services rose by 75,000 from March, and temporary help services added 24,000 positions over the month.
Retail trade employment rose by 35,000 in April and employment in food services and drinking establishments rose by 33,000. Construction added 32,000 jobs in April and health care 19,000. Mining employment rose by 10,000 in April.
