New Drilling Permits Issued in Ohio, Pennsylvania
COLUMBUS, Ohio – New horizontal drilling permits were issued for Mahoning and Columbiana counties while three new permits were awarded to companies exploring the Utica shale in western Pennsylvania.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has issued a permit to Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake Exploration LLC to plug back and drill a new horizontal well in Green Township in Mahoning County at the Mahar property, records show. The new permit, issued May 25, is the 10th well permitted in the county since large energy corporations began exploring eastern Ohio to drill in the Utica and Point Pleasant formations.
Also, ODNR issued a new horizontal permit for Chesapeake to drill on the Crosser property in Center Township of Columbiana County. The Crosser well is the 34th permit issued in Columbiana County, ODNR records show.
And, ODNR issued eight new horizontal permits for Carroll County, giving Chesapeake the go-ahead to drill three wells in Union Township, two in Fox Township, and three other new wells in Rose, Perry and Loudon townships.
In western Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection issued two new Utica permits May 25 allowing Carrizo Oil & Gas to drill in Mercer County at the Yoder farm in West Salem Township.
Four permits have been issued to Houston-based Carrizo in Mercer County for Utica exploration. The company also has a permit to drill in Trumbull County in Burghill.
Within the last 12 months, 33 new non-Marcellus shale wells have been drilled in Mercer County, according to DEP records.
And, the Pennsylvania DEP issued a new Utica drilling permit May 23 to Hilcorp Energy, Houston, at the Kinkela farm in Pulaski Township in Lawrence County. Since May 2011, 11 non-Marcellus wells have been drilled and another six wells in the Marcellus formation were drilled in Lawrence County.
