New Drilling Permit Issued for Columbiana County
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has issued a new permit for a natural gas well in Columbiana County, according to state records.
A horizontal drilling permit was awarded to Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake Exploration LLC on July 12 in Fairfield Township at the Mellinger farm, ODNR reported Tuesday.
To date, 52 horizontal wells exploring the Utica shale have been permitted in Columbiana County, ODNR records show. The Sanor well in Knox Township is the first producing well in the county, while another well in West Township at the Ayrview Acres farm is drilled and ready for production.
ODNR also approved permits on July 13 for Chesapeake to drill two horizontal Utica wells on the Slates farm in Loudon Township in Carroll County. In June, Chesapeake activated two more wells in the county, both on the Bailey farm in Lee Township.
Carroll County has the most horizontal drilling permits than any other Ohio county, records show. Since May 2011, ODNR has issued 101 permits – most of them to Chesapeake – for drilling rights in the Utica shale there.
ODNR also approved two permits July 12 for Chesapeake to drill at the Dawson farm in Harrison County.
And, a new permit was issued for Mountaineer Keystone LLC to drill in Hiram Township in Portage County, ODNR reported.
