Marathon, Harvest Pipeline Plan Wellsville Project
WELLSVILLE, Ohio – A new agreement to develop infrastructure here at the Intermodal Park here underscores the significant role the Ohio River port is playing in Marathon Petroleum Corp.’s plans to transport hydrocarbon liquids production from the Utica Shale in eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania.
Marathon, based in Findlay, and Harvest Pipeline Co., based in Houston, jointly announced Tuesday they will collaborate on a project that will result in up to 24,000 barrels per day (bpd) of truck unloading capacity and a terminal capable of loading up to 50,000 bpd onto barges on the Ohio River here.
The project includes modifications to Marathon Petroleum Corp.'s existing river terminal to accommodate the additional volume for loading onto barges, and a new truck rack to be built on property leased by Harvest Pipeline next to the Marathon facility.
The value of the infrastructure investment was not released.
"With two of our refineries literally on top of the Utica shale formation, we are committed to positioning ourselves as the customer of choice for liquids production from the Utica," said George Shaffner, Marathon’s senior vice president of Transportation and Logistics, in a prepared statement. "This project with Harvest Pipeline Co. will strengthen our competitive position."
The letter of intent with Harvest Pipeline represents the second investment Marathon is making toward accommodating Utica production, Shaffner added. Earlier this summer, the company completed of a new truck rack capable of unloading 12,000 barrels per day, expandable to 24,000 bpd, at its Canton refinery.
Steve Jacobs, the president of Harvest Pipeline, said the collaboration “will help provide maximum value from oil produced in the region."
The joint project is anticipated to be complete by year-end 2013.
