Exxon Moves Forward to Drill in Southern Utica

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- XTO Energy Inc., a subsidiary of Exxon Mobil Corp., was awarded eight of the 12 new horizontal drilling permits issued by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources last week, the agency reports.
XTO received eight new permits to drill wells in Belmont County, in the southern tier of the Utica shale. The wells are targeted for York and Mead townships, ODNR reports.
Also, CNX Gas Co., a subsidiary of Consol Energy, Pittsburgh, received three permits to drill two wells in Monroe County and one in Noble County, also in the southern portion of the Utica, ODNR reports.
A single permit was issued to Statoil USA Onshore for a new horizontal well in Monroe County, the agency reported.
No new drilling permits were issued in Trumbull, Columbiana or Mahoning counties, according to ODNR.
And no new permits were issued in Lawrence and Mercer counties in western Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
