Coalition Lists Best Practices for Marcellus Supply Chain
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Marcellus Shale Coalition Thursday released a two-page document, “Recommended Practices for Supply Chain,” that sets forth “guiding principles” its members “embrace and operate by” to secure contracts from oil and gas exploration and development companies.
“As an industry, we are fully committed to helping local business expand and hire,” said Kathryn Klaber, president of the Marcellus Shale Coalition, in releasing the document.
The industry-funded coalition was founded in 2008. It has hosted 15 supply chain forums in partnership with 18 economic development agencies and chambers of commerce across the Marcellus region, Klaber notes. In March, the coalition launched an online business directory -- www.MarcellusOnMainStreet.org -- designed exclusively to connect the natural gas industry with the region’s small- and medium-sized businesses.
Here are the recommended practices “aimed at bolstering the region’s supply chain” as outlined in the coalition document:
- We, the members of the Marcellus Shale Coalition, embrace and operate by the following guiding principles:
- We provide the safest possible workplace for our employees, our contractors, and in the communities in which we operate;
- We implement state-of-the-art environmental protection across our operations;
- We continuously improve our practices and seek transparency in our operations;
- We strive to attract and retain a talented and engaged local workforce;
- We are committed to being responsible members of the communities in which we work;
- We encourage spirited public dialogue and fact-based education about responsible shale gas development; and
- We conduct our business in a manner that will provide sustainable and broad-based economic and energy security benefits for all.
- We recognize that to succeed in business, we must not only embrace these principles, we must live by them each and every day.
This recommended practice is critical for:
- Sourcing direct supplies and services from within the Marcellus Shale region;
- Identifying current deficiencies in existing supply chains, and developing
- networks of local suppliers and service companies to meet industry needs;
- Supporting training and education for the development of local workforces that
- are meeting the growing demands of our industry;
- Establishing methods by which to document and report total dollars spent within the Marcellus Shale region; and
- Providing timely information to the MSC for the purpose of educating the public, legislators, communities and media of the positive economic benefit of
- responsible shale gas development.
