Chesapeake Energy Secures 5 New Permits in Utica

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Chesapeake Exploration LLC, a subsidiary of Chesapeake Energy Corp., continues to be the most aggressive exploration company in terms of permitting and drilling in the Utica shale, according to government records.
Last week, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued five new permits for horizontal wells in the Utica, all to Chesapeake, according to state data.
The Oklahoma City-based company secured one permit Jan. 2 for a new well at the Briceland Trust pad in Franklin Township in Columbiana County, ODNR reports.
Four additional permits were issued to Chesapeake for the Peterson farm in Lee Township, Carroll County, records show.
For the week ended Jan. 4, no other permits from either or Ohio or Pennsylvania were awarded to companies that operate in the Utica records show.
Since 2010, 1,037 horizontal drilling permits have been issued to energy companies seeking to drill in eastern Ohio's Utica shale. Of those permitted, 668 are drilled and 251 are in production.
There are 35 rigs now operating in the Utica, ODNR reports.
Other energy producers have applications filed for well permits since Dec. 1, records show.
Atlas Noble LLC filed an application Dec. 11 to drill a new horizontal well at the Firestone Homestead off state Route 14 in Unity Township, Columbiana County, records show.
Energy companies submitted no new applications to drill in Mahoning or Trumbull counties during December. The last permit filed for a new well in Mahoning County was from Houston-based Halcon Operating Co., which applied Oct. 11 to drill a new horizontal well in Jackson Township on the Grenamyer Farm off of New Road. A permit was issued for that well Oct. 24.
However, American Energy Inc., Cortland, filed a permit application Dec. 5 to drill a salt-water injection well in Brookfield Township near the intersection of McMullen Street and state Route 7, ODNR records show.
American Energy Associates Inc. recently completed its first injection well in Greene Township in Trumbull County, just west of state Route 11.
In Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection issued three permits Dec. 17 to Hilcorp Energy Co. for new horizontal wells on the Ratvasky property in Pulaski Township in Lawrence County.
No new permits were issued in Mercer County in December through Jan. 7, according to the Pennsylvania DEP.
