Chamber Urges Defeat of Anti-Fracking Amendment
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber Board of Directors has given its support the Mahoning Valley Coalition for Job Growth and Investment’s efforts to defeat another anti-oil-and-gas charter amendment in Youngstown.
Last May, the coalition worked to defeat a similar measure on the city ballot.
The board’s resolution backs the coalition’s opposition to the anti-fracking amendment on the November ballot, saying the so-called Community Bill of Rights is a bad idea, said Tom Humphries, chamber president and CEO.
The coalition is a group of business, political, labor and community leaders united in support of shale development and opposed to the proposed charter amendment. The chamber helped to form the group.
Last May, the margin of defeat was 57% to 43%. In July, the coalition announced its opposition to another attempt to put a local bill of rights on the November ballot, asking residents of the city not to sign petitions to place the measure on the ballot.
Supporters of the bill of rights barely collected the number of valid signatures needed, the chamber said.
