YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- During the week ended Dec. 28, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued three new horizontal well permits for oil and gas exploration in eastern Ohio's Utica shale, two of them in Columbiana County, records show.
ODNR awarded all three permits to Chesapeake Exploration LLC, a division of Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake Energy Corp.
Both wells in Columbiana County are pegged for the Pitts farm in Franklin Township, according to ODNR data. A third well is planned for Augusta Township in nearby Carroll County.
Since 2010, ODNR has issued 1,033 horizontal well permits in the Utica shale. Of that number, 661 are drilled and 249 of the wells are in production.
No new well permits were reported for Mahoning or Trumbull counties during the week.
Likewise, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection did not issue any new permits for Mercer or Lawrence counties in western Pennsylvania, according to the DEP website.
