Delphi Corp.'s Aerospace Business Reaches for the Sky
TROY, Mich. -- Delphi Corp. will provide advanced technology for general aviation engines at Lycoming Engines, officials announced earlier today. The contract, the details of which remain confidential at the customer's request, marks Delphi's continued growth into adjacent markets. "Delphi's roller valve lifters will enhance the technology and performance of our complete line of engine models," said Ian Walsh, vice president and general manager, Lycoming Engines. "Delphi's technology expertise in valve train systems, its testing capabilities and manufacturing excellence make it a logical supplier choice for the aerospace industry."Delphi's advanced roller valve lifter technology will be featured on Lycoming's 2005 models. Lycoming selected Delphi as its key supplier to assist in the implementation of the company's roller tappet program, Walsh said.Delphi developed the first direct hydraulic valve lifter, and also led the automotive industry in incorporating the first roller hydraulic valve lifter into production vehicles."Delphi developed and has proven systems technologies in automotive engine systems working in one of the harshest mechanical environments in the world, the automobile," said Guy C. Hachey, Delphi vice president and president of Delphi Energy & Chassis Systems. "This is an important contract for Delphi because it shows that we are successfully leveraging our existing technology to move into adjacent markets."Those markets, which include consumer electronics, commercial vehicles and New Markets, are expected to exceed $1.6 billion in 2004, he said, noting that Delphi has been a qualified supplier to all major defense contractors for more than 25 years and currently is specified into more than 40 programs.Lycoming, which specializes in the manufacture and support of piston aircraft engines, is an operating division of Textron's Avco Corp."
