Cynthia Anderson Is 2004 Athena Award Recipient
BOARDMAN, Ohio -- Cynthia E. Anderson, vice president for student affairs at Youngstown State University, is the recipient of the 2004 Athena Award. The award, presented Thursday night before a near-record crowd of more than 800 gathered at Mr. Anthony's, was conferred by the Regional Chamber in co-sponsorship with The Vindicator.The Athena Award is given annually to recognize area business and professional women who have demonstrated excellence in their chosen career, provided leadership in the community and mentored or contributed to the growth of other professional women.Anderson's accomplishments include co-authoring YSU's enrollment management plan and student recruitment plan, establishing the first formal student orientation program and establishing a student leadership program.Her community contributions include serving on the boards of Leadership Mahoning Valley, Associate Neighborhoods Center, the Mahoning Valley Association of Churches and the Women's Health Information Network.In letters supporting her nomination for the Athena Award, Anderson was described as a "role model" and "mentor," officials said in presenting her award. Anderson's peers also noted her ability to relate to students as remarkable, while students praised her open-door policy in which they can go to her to talk to seek advice at any time.Sandra Beach Lin, president of Chicago-based Closure Systems International (CSI) at Alcoa, was the evening's featured speaker."
