Credit Unions to Celebrate International Credit Union Day
DUBLIN, Ohio -- Credit unions across Ohio and around the world will commemorate International Credit Union Day on Oct. 21, according to the Ohio Credit Union League. Ohio's more than 500 credit unions and 2.8 million members will celebrate the unique service credit unions provide and the many ways families and communities have benefited from the credit union difference.Currently, more than 123 million people worldwide belong to more than 40,000 credit unions. In the United States, credit unions total 9,709 and have 84.8 million members.This year's theme is, "Credit Unions: Dream, Belong, Achieve." The theme continues credit unions' long history of defining service to those in need and those willing to help themselves.Credit unions throughout Ohio are collecting non-perishable food items this month to benefit their local communities. The Ohio Credit Union Food Drive celebrates October's International Credit Union Month and the credit union philosophy of People Helping People, according to an Ohio Credit Union League news release.As nonprofit financial institutions that are owned and democratically controlled by their members, credit unions provide savings, loans, and other consumer financial services to their members, the release states.For the 20th year, credit unions topped all other financial institutions in consumer satisfaction ratings in the 2004 American Banker/Gallup Consumer survey, the news release said. Credit unions led the ratings for staff friendliness and courtesy, speed of loan decisions, deposit rates, and improvements from year-to-year in service quality.
