Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way Kicks-Off Campaign
"YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The 2004 Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way campaign kicked off Tuesday night with the announcement that 29% of the campaign's goal, or $915,000, already has been pledged.The kickoff event, held at Mt. Carmel Banquet Hall, featured reports on the early results of the pacesetter and leadership campaigns. Tom Hollern, National City Bank area president and campaign, said year's campaign goal is $3.2 million -- 29% of which has been secured by the pacesetter and leadership campaigns."I want to thank the members of my campaign cabinet and the entire team of campaign volunteers and company coordinators for their dedication and commitment to United Way and to our community," Hollern said. "Although we are off to a great start, we must raise $3.2 mikllion to continue the valuable services that are provided through the 90 programs operated by our 31 United Way agencies.Hollern introduced the members of his campaign cabinet, who will lead the team of campaign volunteers. Mary Novak, staff accountant for Parker Hannifin Corp. and chairman of The Community Corp., thanked the volunteers who participated in the largest ever Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way Day of Caring, which was held earlier that day. More than 450 volunteers from 50 local businesses completed much-needed projects at 41 different locations throughout the community. "Day of Caring shows how important volunteers are to the success of our agencies -- and to our United Way, " Novak said. "This community-wide event is so important, not only because of the number of projects that are completed for our agencies, but also because it allows volunteers from companies all across the Valley to see first hand the wonderful services that are provided by our United Way agencies." Richard C. Stevens, regional manager of Charter One Bank, and chairman of the Pacesetter Campaign, reported that $629,000 has been raised so far by the 70 Pacesetter organizations, with a number of these early campaigns still in progress. Stevens acknowledged the following companies for achieving a minimum increase of 10% in their total employee and corporate contributions: Better Business Bureau, +181%; Big Brothers Big Sisters, +154%; Goodwill Industries, +21%; Help Hotline Crisis Center, +23%; Hynes Industries, +10%; J.C. Penney, Austintown Plaza, +32%; Mahoning County Council for Retarded Citizens, +25%; ms consultants, +53%; Neil Kennedy Recovery Clinic, +38%; United Methodist Community Center, +43%; Visiting Nurse Association, +19%; Volunteer Service Agency, +25%; WalMart--Austintown, +21%; Youngstown Buick Pontiac GMC, +45%. "We truly appreciate the support of these organizations," Stevens said.
