Vindicator Blasts Striking Guild for Using Nonunion Printer
"YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- With contract talks between The Vindicator and striking members of the Youngstown Newspaper Guild at a standstill, the public relations battle heated up this morning as the newspaper published a front-page story headlined "Guild uses nonunion plant to print paper."The story reports that Lyle Printing and Publishing Co. of Salem is printing the Valley Voice, the strike newspaper published by the Youngstown Newspaper Guild. It also reiterates that the Youngstown Publishing Co., which does business as The Business Journal, is providing consulting services to the union -- which The Vindicator first reported last week and The Business Journal disclosed in a statement faxed Friday to the daily newspaper. Lyle Printing and the Youngstown Publishing Co. are nonunion companies. Said Mark Brown, general manager of The Vindicator in his newspaper's story published today, "I find it unbelievable that our union is using two nonunion problucations -- both of which are direct competitors of The Vindicator -- to produce a strike paper to attack the only union newspaper in the Valley."Scot Darling, chief executive officer of Lyle Printing, released a statement this morning that noted his company offers web press services to "a number of local companies. We would not deny our printing services to those who have the ability and resources to produce a newspaper of local interest. This account represents one of many commercial accounts we handle," he said. The content of the strike newspaper is "solely the intellectual property of the Valley Voice," Darling emphasized. "We hope the current negotiations at The Vindicator between management and labor reach an amicable conclusion," he added. "In the meantime, and thereafter, we will continue to offer our commercial printing services to those, who like us, cherish the free enterprise system of a democratic society that values freedom of the press."Lyle Printing Co., which publishes the Farm and Dairy, has been in business since 1890. It is owned by the Darling family.Local 34011 of the Newspaper Guild--Communications Workers of America Guild walked off their jobs Nov. 16 after their two-year contract expired. Negotiations took place yesterday but broke off when the company left the talks without responding to a guild counterproposal.Anthony S. Markota, president of the guild, said he personally appealed to the management a union printing company to print the strike newspaper but was turned down.On Friday a printing company in Pennsylvania pulled the Valley Voice off its presses after upper management learned it was a strike newspaper. Lyle Printing was then contacted, according to Markota, and agreed to print the newspaper. Some 51,000 copies were distributed Saturday to homes and stores across the Mahoning Valley, the union said. A second edition will be published this weekend.Visit The Vindicator at www.vindy.comVisit the Valley Voice at www.valleyvoiceonline.comVisit Lyle Printing at www.lyleprinting.com"
