"SRU Center on Disability and Health Receives $125,000"
"SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Slippery Rock University will use a $125,000 federal grant to continue providing exercise and health education to regional residents with disabilities through its Center on Disability and Health. The grant will keep the center operating through the 2005-2006 school year, according to Dr. Robert Arnhold, professor of exercise and rehabilitative sciences and center director.Operated by faculty and students in SRU's adapted physical activity minor, the resource center helps community members with physical and mental disabilities develop healthy lifestyles and reduce health risks associated with obesity, such as heart disease and diabetes. The center provides parent and teacher training, printed materials, professional contacts and exercise programs such as aquatics and horseback riding.About 175 people benefit every week, Arnhold said. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provided the grant working with U.S. Rep.Phil English, (R-3rd, Erie), who helped obtain a $161,000 grant to open the center in August. "The activities and information available at this SRU facility are a great step forward for the area's disabled and a valuable resource for their families," English said.Visit Slippery Rock University: www.sru.edu"
