Shepherd of the Valley to Buy High/Low Beds
"BOARDMAN, Ohio -- Four charitable grants to Shepherd's Foundation totaling $17,840 will be used toward the purchase of the final 25 High/Low beds for Shepherd of the Valley-Boardman. The project began in 1998 with a goal of acquiring a total of 70 beds. The four grants, plus donations from families and friends and proceeds from the annual golf benefit, enabled Shepherd's Foundation to purchase the final 25 beds that Boardman requested."The beds are a great safety measure for our residents and employees," said Rich Limongi, associate director at the Boardman facility. "Due to the physical ability of residents in the nursing environment there is a high percentage of falls and injuries. One means of combating this issue is by use of the High/Low Bed."According to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control 75% of nursing residents fall annually, 10% to 20% of those falls cause serious injuries. Lowering bed height is one suggested method to reduce the numbers of falls. The AP Riser bed, made by NOA Medical Industries, can descend to 7 inches off the floor and rise to 26 inches high, a convenient working height for staff to help reduce excess bending and back strain, Limongi said. The grants are as follows: The Youngstown Foundation, $9,400; Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, $3,540; the Ruth H. Beecher Charitable Trust, $2,500; and the Walter E. & Caroline H. Watson Trust, $2,400.Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Retirement Services Inc. is a Christian nonprofit corporation that provides care to the local community through an integrated continuum of services. Shepherd of the Valley has four locations in Mahoning and Trumbull counties."
