Mahoning Valley Car Buyers Get in Gear in January
"VIENNA, Ohio -- Area new car sales are revving up compared to those reported a year ago.The January report issued by the Automobile Dealers Association of Eastern Ohio shows dealers in the tri-county area sold 1,706 new cars, up nearly 300 from 1,419 in January 2005. The bulk of the increase -- more than 200 vehicles -- was from cars and trucks titled outside Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties. New vehicle sales were up slightly for vehicles titled in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, according to the ADAEO report. New truck sales, however, dropped 13.8% in January compared to Janary 2004, the dealers group reported. One year ago, 857 new trucks were sold by local dealers compared to 739 last month.Total vehicle sales -- new cars and trucks -- increased to 2,445 in January compared to January 2004, a gain of 7.4%.Chevrolet was the most popular make sold by area dealers, with 472 new units, up from 404 a year ago. Dealers reported 383 Pontiacs sold, up from 294 a year ago. Pontiac was the most popular make in Mahoning County, with 158 units sold, up from 133 a year ago. Chevrolet also was the most popular make in Mahoning's neighbors to the north and south, with 91 new vehicles sold to Trumbull buyers, down from 114 a year ago, and 53 sold to Columbiana buyers, up from 29 in January 2004.
