"I Scream, You ScreamWhere to go online to keep your cool.Living in a house that's a few decades older than we are means unless we want to sell our first-born son, fixing everything that needs fixed to accommodate central air conditioning is out of the question. So when temperatures start down the other side of the 80 degree mark, we start looking for ways to keep our cool.Ice cream is the time-honored -- not to mention tasty -- way to accomplish this. Our favorite is Handel's Homemade Ice Cream & Yogurt, which is based in Canfield and operates about 10 stores in the Mahoning and Shenango valleys.Handel's will ship its products anywhere in the United States by air, but that seems a little excessive since its store on Route 422 in Niles is close to our home. We check the company's Web site (www.handelsicecream.com) to see what's new, such as the flavor of the month, before heading out.I learned, for instance, that on the first Tuesday of every month, customers get $1 off each quart purchased, or 50 cents a pint. Since we prefer to buy our ice cream in packed form to store in our freezer -- our grandkids beg for spoonfuls of decadent "Chocoholic Chunk" -- that's a plus.Handel's online newsletter includes helpful updates, and I appreciate the option of viewing it as a real Web page as well as in PDF format.Another summertime treat is being out on a golf course for a few rounds, or so my husband claims. Fortunately, there are plenty of courses to choose from in northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania. You can search for them at the Golf Course Portal (http://golfcourseportal.com), at the Ohio Golf Association (www.ohiogolf.com), Golf Ohio.com or the Ohio Golf Course Owners Association (www.buckeyegolf.com). For Pennsylvania courses, try GolfGuideWeb.com/pennsylvania or Golfable.com/golfcourses.Few local courses have their own Web sites, but there are notable exceptions. Pine Lakes Golf Club, formerly Hubbard Golf Course, has been revamped and now has five new lakes, 12 new bunkers, four new greens and over two miles of new cart paths (www.golfpinelakes.com). Greens fees and a course map are posted online, as are directions to the course.Similar information is offered by Riverview Golf Club, Newton Falls (www.riverviewgc.com) and Tamer Win Golf & Country Club, Cortland (www.tamerwin.com).Brookfield's beautiful Yankee Run Golf Course (www.yankeerun.com) takes the online experience a few steps further. At the Pro Shop, PayPal accountholders can buy caps and balls featuring the Yankee Run logo as well as the Golf Ohio Card, which sells for $40 and offers discounts at Ohio courses. Visitors also are invited to sign up to receive e-mails about events and special offers. Cooling off when you need to is easy if you've got a swimming pool, and one of the best-known places to buy one is Burnett Pools and Spas (www.burnettpoolsandspas.com). New this year is a line of Splash Superpools with depths ranging from 2 to 5 feet. Colorful photos download fast and give you an idea of what's available before you leave home.Another feature lets you apply for pre-approved financing online through American General Financing for products you plan to purchase at Burnett's stores in Cortland, Canfield and New Castle, Pa.And how about a pair of cool sandals to wear on the deck of your new pool? Laura Zellers of Bristolville makes nifty ones at her business, Fancy Feet Sandals. You can buy them online (www.fancyfeetsandals.com). These sandals are, in fact, bottomless. Made from colorful beads and elastic thread, one end loops around the wearer's ankle and the other around the second toe. Several styles are available, and Zellers will make them to order as well. Prices range from $14.95 a pair to $49.95, and shipping is $4 for orders up to $49."
