Elected Officials Meet with Vindicator Management
"YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Three of the state legislators who attended this afternoon's press event to express support for workers on strike against The Vindicator -- and one who did not attend the union event -- met with the general manager of the newspaper for one hour this afternoon.State Sen. Robert Hagan (D-Youngstown), who was not at the press event, joined state Rep. John Boccierri, state Rep. Sandra Stabile Harwood and Mahoning County Commissioner David Ludt for the meeting with Mark Brown. The politicians later explained to union members their intention was to urge newspaper management to resume negotiations with members of Local 34011 of the Newspaper Guild--Communications Workers of America, said Anthony Markota, union president.Brown has not returned phone calls from The Business Journal. Today's edition of The Vindicator contained a front-page story reporting that The Business Journal is assisting the Youngstown Newspaper Guild in publishing its strike paper, the Valley Voice.Andrea Wood, president of the Youngstown Publishing Co., which does business as The Business Journal, issued a statement today explaining her company's consulting arrangement with the guild. The Valley Voice, posted online this morning at www.valleyvoice.com, will be distributed tomorrow to households and newsstands across the Mahoning Valley, said Anthony Markota, president of the guild."
