Congressman Returns Mid-Term Pay Increase
"WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. Ted Strickland (D-Ohio 6th) yesterday received notification that he returned $8,648.88 to the U.S. Treasury last year as a result of not accepting the mid-term Congressional pay increase and paying the full cost of his own health insurance, according to a news release from the congressman's office. In January 2004, members received an automatic annual salary adjustment of 2.2%. Since first being elected to office, Strickland has consistently voted against and returned to the U.S. Treasury mid-term pay raises, the release said. In addition, he has paid for all of his health care as well as his wife's by returning subsidies received for his insurance. During his time in office, he has returned more than $49,600 to the U.S. Treasury. In the letter to Strickland announcing receipt of the returned funds, Jay Rao, associate administrator for the House chief administrative officer, called the return "a gift toward the reduction of public debt.""
