"Cheerleaders, Athletes to Headline DeBartolo Benefit"
"YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Cheerleaders from the San Francisco 49ers as well as past and present professional athletes will headline the Celebrity Gala Dinner and Golf Tournament for the Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. Memorial Scholarship Foundation. Headed by Denise DeBartolo York, the foundation is holding the two-day event, June 27-28, at Tippecanoe Country Club and Mr. Anthony's Banquet Center. DeBartolo York said her father, Edward J. DeBartolo Sr., valued the importance of education, having worked his way through college and graduating from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in civil engineering. "He created one of the nation's greatest business success stories from what he learned as a child growing up in Youngstown: a strong work ethic, a firm belief in education and the American Dream," she continued. "The scholarships given in his memory help provide students the opportunity to become a success story like my dad, and I am honored to be a part of that." In addition to the 49ers cheerleaders, the event will feature pro football, basketball and hockey players, as well as other local celebrities. The golf tournament is sold out, though tickets are still available for the dinner. The guests at the tournament will have opportunities to win various prizes while helping out the local students in the community. The golf outing's feature prize will be "a million-dollar shot for a lifetime" where golfers have the opportunity to win a $1 million lifetime annuity. The dinner gala, held Sunday evening, will include entertainment with the Hern Brothers Band and an auction. A lucky guest who has the "license to win" will receive a brand new car, while autographed sports apparel and travel packages are just a few items the foundation is auctioning. At the event, the foundation also will recognize Nick Polito for his efforts in helping less fortunate students attend college.Over the years, proceeds from this annual event have made it possible to award nearly $300,000 in scholarships to area high school seniors. This year's winners were recognized at a ceremony held May 20.
