"200 Area Schools Share $77,000 Donation"
"YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Sparkle Markets distributed more than $77,000 to approximately 200 area schools as a result of its 2003-04 "Dollars for Students" campaign. Since its inception in 1990, the program has raised more than $1.1 million in cash and supplies for local nursery, elementary, vocational and high schools, according to Charles Zander, president of Sparkle Markets Association.Throughout the campaign, which takes place between fall and spring of each year, students and their families are encouraged to save their Sparkle register receipts, which are printed on specially-colored receipt tapes throughout the program period, and give them to the program coordinator of any participating school. Many schools hold inter-classroom contests or offer incentives to motivate students to collect the tapes. Each year after the program's end date, Sparkle donates 1% of the total of each school's register tape total to the school that collected those receipts. "It's just a great way for us to say 'thanks' to the schools, which play such an important role in our community," Zander says."Dollars for Students" is the only such program that places no restrictions on the way schools spend their rewards, Zander says. Schools have used contributions from previous campaigns to pay for field trips, computers, art supplies, athletic equipment, and other materials.Visit Sparkle Markets: www.sparklemarket.com"
