Wean Foundation Honored for Efforts in Youngstown
WARREN, Ohio -- The Raymond John Wean Foundation has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, in partnership with the Council on Foundations, as one of 10 recipients of the Secretary’s Award for Public-Philanthropic Partnerships.
The award honors philanthropic funders for their innovative collaborations designed to address housing and community development challenges.
The awards were announced during the Council on Foundations’ fall Conference for Community Foundations in San Diego. “As a winner of the Secretary's Award for Public-Philanthropic Partnerships, we are honored to be among such esteemed company, ” said Jennifer Roller, Foundation interim president, in a prepared statement.
"This recognition demonstrates the high regard for this important work and validates the essential collaborations that can transform communities. This partnership was made possible because both The Raymond John Wean Foundation and the City of Youngstown boldly committed resources to ensure genuine resident engagement. It thrives because the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp. continues to be a remarkable driving force in community revitalization efforts in the City of Youngstown.”
In 2009, the Wean Foundation established a partnership with the city of Youngstown intended to maximize the impact of public and private dollars devoted to curbing neighborhood decline and to execute Youngstown 2010, a comprehensive plan.
The Wean Foundation worked with Mayors Jay Williams and Charles P. Sammarone and the director of the Youngstown Community Development Agency to establish a community development corporation to initiate and execute neighborhood stabilization projects. In early 2009, the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp. opened its doors. YNDC manages all housing and neighborhood stabilization programs Youngstown supports and coordinates with the city’s planning, community development, code enforcement and demolition departments, Roller noted.
“I would like to congratulate the Wean Foundation and YNDC on receiving this distinguished award from HUD," Sammarone said. "I look forward to continuing our partnership as we attempt to revitalize neighborhoods within the city of Youngstown.”
