Local Auto Sales Slow Down in January

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Auto dealerships in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties report sales of new cars and trucks slipped almost 10% in January compared to the same month a year ago.
According to the Automobile Dealers Association of Eastern Ohio's monthly sales report, released Thursday, local showrooms sold 1,811 new models during January compared to 2,009 sold in January 2011, a drop of 9.8%.
Combined sales of new and used vehicles stood at 4,596 units versus 4,757 sold in January 2011, down 3.3%.
The top-selling new model for the month was the Chevrolet Cruze with 132 models sold. The Chevrolet Malibu was the second-best seller with 91 sold; the Chevrolet Silverado was third highest with 69 sold; the Ford Escape sold 65 new units, while dealerships reported that 63 new Chevrolet Equinox SUVs were sold.
Greenwood Chevrolet, Austintown, reported the highest volume of new vehicles sold during the month with 127. Taylor Kia of Boardman sold 110 new vehicles; Bob & Chuck Eddy Chrysler Dodge Jeep reported 95 new vehicle sales; Columbiana Buick Cadillac sold 88 new vehicles and Sweeney Chevrolet sold 87 new cars and trucks.
