Columbiana County Residents May Qualify for Financial Help
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Columbiana County residents who are victims of the recent floods and severe weather may be eligible for up to $1,500 in disaster assistance through the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, Gov. Bob Taft announced today. "Funding is available immediately to help families as they recover from flooding and severe weather," Taft said.On Aug. 28, in the aftermath of the severe weather that begin the previous day, the governor declared the county to be in a state of emergency. Flood victims residing in Columbiana County may apply for one of two types of disaster assistance, Taft said. Families that include a minor child, a pregnant woman or have evidence of economic need may qualify for up to $1,500 in disaster assistance, the governor said.Elderly and disabled individuals not eligible for the $1,500 may qualify for a one-time cash payment of up to $750 if they are at least 55 years old and childless or are receiving certain disability benefits and can provide evidence of an economic need, Taft noted. Only one payment may be made per dwelling, he added. Each year, the department reserves $5 million in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families funding for disaster victims in counties declared in a state of emergency, Taft said.Applications will be accepted at the Columbiana County Department of Job and Family Services in Lisbon.
