YSU Summer Art Festival Set for July 7-8
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – More than 70 local, regional and national artists will have their works on display and for sale at the 14th annual Summer Festival of the Arts at Youngstown State University, set for July 7 and 8.
The festival will be held 10 a.m.-7 p.m. July 7 and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. July 8. For the second year, the Youngstown Jazz Festival will take place, July 7 at Harrison Common on Walnut Street in Smoky Hollow. YSU, the Mahoning County Convention & Visitors Bureau and the city of Youngstown are collaborating on the events surrounding the weekend.
In addition to the artists’ marketplace, which will showcase the work of artists selling original, hand-crafted pieces such as jewelry, paintings, sketches, sculptures, glass, wood and textiles, the festival will feature family activities including the popular hands-on art tent where children are encouraged to create various pieces of artwork under the guidance of a professional art teacher, and dozens of music, theater and dance performances are also scheduled. In addition, numerous YSU departments will participate with activities and displays.
The event which spans the entire length of the campus, from the McDonough Museum of Art to DeBartolo Hall, where the Lemon Grove Café will provide non-stop entertainment during the two-day event. Many local arts and cultural groups will also provide open hours and activities at their off-campus locations. The Butler Institute of American Art, Arms Museum, Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor, OH WOW! The Roger & Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science & Technology, YWCA Women’s Art Show at the McDonough Museum of Art, Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County Main Branch, St. John’s Episcopal Church, First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown are among the participants.
The Summer Festival of the Arts will also include the Festival of Nations, an ethnic festival welcoming over 20 ethnic clubs and churches that provide ethnic memorabilia, performances and food.
Headlining the concert at this year’s Youngstown Jazz Festival is Pieces of a Dream. This band has 30-plus years in the world of jazz with 18 albums to its credit. Others performing that evening are The John Reese Project, Alton Merrell, Laura Varcho and Soundoctrine. Doors open at 5 p.m. The concert is free and patrons are permitted to bring in picnic baskets containing food and non-alcoholic beverages. Parking will be available in the Wick Avenue parking deck at YSU for a nominal fee. In the event of inclement weather there is no rain date or indoor facility scheduled.
Among the additional activities that weekend are the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Summerfest, July 5-8, 220 N. Walnut St., and the Smoky Hollow 5k Race slated for Saturday, July 7 at 7:45 a.m.
