YSU, Art Youngstown to Fly 'Twenty-Twelve Flags'
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Summer Festival of the Arts is collaborating with Art Youngstown Inc. to produce and exhibit a third public art project called “Twenty-Twelve Flags.” Artists are invited to incorporate their idea of a flag design to be displayed during Youngstown State University’s Summer Festival of the Arts, which takes place July 7 and 8.
This year is an election year, thus inspiring the spirit of democracy, said Lori A. Factor, coordinator of the Summer Festival of the Arts. The flags will be affixed to the trunks of trees throughout the university grounds. Artists are asked to come up with an original design for a flag that best promotes themselves, their family crest, a state, country, school, university, feelings, business/organization, etc. The format is a vertically oriented canvas, 2 feet by 3 feet, and artists are encouraged to use recycled or repurposed materials. The canvas will be supplied by Art Youngstown.
“Our collaboration with Art Youngstown in doing a public art project during the Summer Festival of the Arts is a key component of the event," Factor noted. "It’s exciting to see the many interpretations of the theme and how each artist creates their artwork and, it’s becoming a nice tradition.”
There is no cost to participate, but artists must be 16 years or older, whether professional or amateur. Preregistration is required by calling 330 941 3105. The material pick-up time has been set for June 7 and 8 at YSU’s Bliss Hall near the University Theater Box Office from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
