YNDC Awards 10 People’s Garden Grants
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Neighborhood and community groups from along the Mahoning River Corridor have been awarded People's Garden grants from the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp. Winners represent the communities of Campbell, McDonald, Warren and Youngstown.
The 10 awards, totaling more than $27,000, culminated a three-month application and review process that resulted in more than 20 applications. Projects include vegetable, recreational and wildlife gardens.
YNDC was one of only 10 organizations throughout the United States to receive a U.S. Department of Agriculture People’s Garden Program grant award. The program is designed to facilitate the creation of produce, recreation, and/or wildlife gardens in urban and rural areas, which will provide opportunities for science-based informal education.
“These 10 new garden spaces will provide healthy fresh produce, recreational activities, and educational opportunities to residents throughout the Mahoning River Corridor," said Liberty Merrill, YNDC program coordinator. "We are looking forward to working with these communities to make each garden project a success.”
