Christian Elected President of Mahoning Bar Association
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Shirley J. Christian has been elected president of the Mahoning County Bar Association, a professional society of attorneys with more than 500 members.
Christian, a partner in the firm of Harrington, Hoppe & Mitchell, is only the second woman to be elected president of the bar association. Kathy McNabb Welsh, county deputy clerk of courts, was the first, elected in 2002.
She has practiced law 26 years and joined the Harrington firm in 1986. She serves on its management committee. Her practice focuses on medical malpractice defense and employment and labor law.
Before her election to a one-year term Monday night at the annual banquet of the bar association, Christian served as a trustee and on its grievance committee. She has also served on the Board of Governors of the Ohio State Bar Association and as a member of the Ohio Supreme Court Board of Commissioners on Grievances and Discipline. Christian has also served on the task force on gender fairness of state Supreme Court.
Closer to home, Christian was instrumental, in partnership with Northeastern Ohio Legal Services, in holding a series of free clinics for low-income residents in Youngstown.
Christian earned a B.S. and master’s degree in education at Edinboro University, Edinboro, Pa., and earned her juris doctorate at Ohio Northern University College of Law. She is licensed to practice in Ohio and Pennsylvania.
