Acorn Founder to Speak at YSU
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Wade Rathke, chief organizer for ACORN International, will speak on “Labor and Community Organizing: Boundaries and Opportunities” on the campus of Youngstown State University March 20.
Rathke is the author of "Citizen Wealth: Winning the Campaign to Save Working Families."
The lecture is part of the YSU Center for Working-Class Studies 2011-2012 Lecture Series. It is co-sponsored by the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Gerontology Social Work.
Rathke founded the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now in 1970. Acorn was a collection of community-based organizations that advocated for a variety of issues, including living wages, education, relief for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, voter registration and gun control. Rathke has been concerned with issues of poverty, hunger and homelessness in America. His career has been marked by the ability to unite labor, business, social service agencies and neighborhood groups to fight for social and economic justice.
The YSU Center for Working-Class Studies is a multidisciplinary teaching and research center devoted to the study of working-class life and culture.
