92% of Thanksgiving Travel Will Be by Car
WASHINGTON -- When Americans hit the road this year for Thanksgiving family gatherings, 31% will travel more than 500 miles, says a survey by GasBuddy.com released Monday. Another 31% will travel between 200 and 500 miles.
This year, 92% will drive compared with 6.5% who fly. While Americans are spending on travel, 71% of survey respondents expect to spend less on Thanksgiving this year.
Some 16% say that savings from lower gas prices is leading them to revise their plans this year. For some, that could mean stretching the Thanksgiving holiday and avoiding traffic.
Key survey findings:
- 36% say their Thanksgiving travel begins Thanksgiving Day while 30% say it starts the day before and 18% will hit the road two to three days before.
- 25% plan to fight the drowsiness that often results from eating turkey and drive home later on Thanksgiving Day, but 42% will wait and drive home Saturday or Sunday. And, 22% expect to hit the road fresh the next morning.
- 95% of respondents have a smartphone; of those, 52% will use two to three travel apps for their Thanksgiving travels and 34% will use four or more.
