Mahoning Valley Agencies Accept $1M from Walmart
Wednesday, May 16, 2012BOARDMAN, Ohio -- Three Mahoning Valley agencies split a $1 million donation from Walmart’s Fighting Hunger Together initiative that aims to spend $2 billion dollars until the year 2015.
“This was just the kickoff,” said Matt Burke, market manager of Walmart in the Mahoning Valley area. “They started with $2 million; $1 million, which we won here today, for the community that cast the most votes on Facebook, then $50,000 to 19 other communities that came in second through 20th. Lucky for us, the Mahoning Valley won the million dollars.”
7,765 New Business Filings in April
Wednesday, May 16, 2012COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A total of 7,765 new entities filed to do business in Ohio in April, according to Jon Husted, secretary of state. In comparison, 7,632 filed in April 2011.
The secretary of state’s office has assisted with 31,565 new business filings to date in 2012 (January through April). This is a slight increase from the same time period last year, in which there were 29,853 new business filings.
Airport Seeks Input to Attract Las Vegas Service
Wednesday, May 16, 2012VIENNA TOWNSHIP, Ohio – The operators of the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport is inviting the public to participate in a brief survey to help attract service to Las Vegas to the airport.
“Time is of the essence for the prospective party to determine whether to operate the service,” Dan Dickten, aviation director, said in an email to area media outlets asking them to publicize the survey.
Chesapeake Gets $3B Loan to Sell Prime Assets

CEO Aubrey McClendon said that a $3 billion loan from Goldman Sachs Group and Jefferies Group gives the company breathing room to complete asset sales it so desperately needs to pay off heavy debt, and to help its transition toward developing its liquids gas portfolio.
"It takes money to make money, and that's the case here," McClendon told investors and analysts during a conference call Monday.
Avalon Holdings Posts $400,000 Net Loss
Monday, May 14, 2012WARREN, Ohio -- Avalon Holdings Corp., which provides waste management services to industrial, commercial, municipal and governmental customers in selected northeastern and Midwestern U.S. markets, reports a net loss of $400,000 in the first quarter of 2012, or 10 cents per share. This compares with a net loss of $300,000, or 9 cents per share, for the first quarter of 2011.
