Mahoning Treasurer Cuts Year-end Statements
Thursday, December 16, 2004"YOUNGSTOWN -- With the failure of the half-percent sales tax in November, Mahoning County Treasurer John Reardon said he has to eliminate sending year-end tax statements in 2004 to property owners who pay their tax through mortgage escrow companies.In past years, approximately 35,000 statements have been sent in December to taxpayers who did not receive that year's regular biannual tax bills, because their real estate tax was included in their monthly mortgage payments then paid to the treasurer on their behalf by the mortgage company.

Judge Urges Compromise on WCI Plans
Thursday, December 16, 2004"WARREN, Ohio -- WCI Steel Inc. will have to wait a little longer before a decision is made regarding the company's plans to reorganize and emerge from bankruptcy protection.U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Marilyn Shea-Stonum filed an opinion late Wednesday concerning two proposed reorganization plans that were previously presented to the court. The opinion urges the parties use the next several weeks to forge a single compromise plan for the court to consider. According to the opinion, neither plan meets all of the legal requirements for the court's approval.

City Council Approves Acquisition of Phar-Mor Land
Thursday, December 16, 2004YOUNGSTOWN -- City Council has approved the purchase of the land beneath the Phar-Mor Centre downtown. Council voted unanimously at last night's meeting to proceed with the purchase the land only -- not the building itself -- for $850,000.The land was originally owned by the Wick family, who leased the property to the Strouss-Hershberg Co., which in the 1940s assigned the lease to the May Co. During the 1980s, May assigned the lease to the city of Youngstown, which in turn assigned it to Strouss Building Associates.
