Harvard Prof to Address Women on Science, Engineering

Prentiss will deliver the keynote address April 26 at the 17th annual Edward W. Powers Women in Science and Engineering Career Workshop and STEM Lecture Series at in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center.
Former MetroPlex to Be Auctioned May 7
Monday, April 14, 2014GIRARD, Ohio --– The former Holiday Inn MetroPlex will go up for auction May 7. The property, which opened in 1987 under the Holiday Inn banner, operated until recently as a Rodeway Inn & Suites, abruptly closing last month following a pair of fires.
The auction will take place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Independence, following onsite inspections scheduled for 2-4 p.m. April 15 and 22 and a May 3 inspection set for 1-3 p.m. The Girard property is one of 25 properties that Chartwell Auctions LLC will offer at the 11 a.m. auction scheduled for May 7.
YSU, University of Akron or Neither Job for Jim Tressel?
Saturday, April 12, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The boards of trustees of Youngstown State University and the University of Akron each hope to have their next president selected by July 1. Former YSU head football coach Jim Tressel has applied for both positions, and in a statement released to the press Friday afternoon, he offered no hint of which job he would accept if both are offered.
UA appears to be on a faster track with finalists for that job to soon be announced, according to published reports.
Advocates, Opponents React to New ODNR Regulations
Friday, April 11, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources' decision to add new regulations to drilling sites across the state in connection with earthquakes last month in Poland Township is a step in the right direction, but more action is needed, a geologist says.
"I'd like to require companies that if they identify a previous unknown fault, they should report it to ODNR," says Raymond Beiersdorfer, a geology professor at Youngstown State University. "There needs to be some responsibility."

Study Spells Out Pluses, Minuses of Shale Drilling

The Multi-State Shale Research Collaborative -- composed of six think tanks across five states -- studied four counties where shale development is most active: Carroll County, Ohio; Greene and Tioga counties in Pennsylvania; and Wetzel County in West Virginia.
Copeland Oaks Kicks Off $1.2M Construction Project
Friday, April 11, 2014SEBRING, Ohio -- Copeland Oaks will add about 10 assisted living units resulting from a $1.2 million project that kicked off Thursday.
A ground-breaking was held for the “assisted living consolidation project,” as executive director Philip Braisted described it. “We’re consolidating all of our assisted living into two buildings. We had it scattered throughout the campus and this is putting it all together in one place,” he said. The consolidation will increase efficiency and create “some really nice new units for those of our folks who live in assisted living.
ACH Launches Public Phase of $18 Million Campaign
Friday, April 11, 2014BOARDMAN, Ohio -- Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley is launching the public phase of its multi-year campaign, Building on the Promise: A Vision for Our Valley’s Children. The goal is to raise $18 million in philanthropic support to finance strategic growth and expansion in the Mahoning Valley.
The quiet phase of the campaign, which began last year, has raised nearly $6 million in gifts and commitments, says Bruce Beeghly, co-chairman the Vision leadership committee. The other co-chairmen are his wife, Nancy, and Paul and Sallie Tod Dutton.
