Regional Chamber Updates Economic Development Numbers
Thursday, September 04, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber reports it has completed development projects totaling $120 million through the first eight months of the year, and $1.37 billion worth of projects are pending.
The numbers are contained in the chamber’s August 2014 newsletter, distributed to members this week.
The number of new jobs created through the completed projects is 469, the chamber says, with 916 more jobs pending should all the projects in the works come to fruition.
Klingle: It's Business as Usual at Injection Wells
Thursday, September 04, 2014NILES, Ohio -- The owner and operator of two wastewater injection wells in Weathersfield Township describes the small earthquake recorded near one as a "total nonevent," as business proceeds as usual at the site.
Meantime, new evidence shows that more than 60 small earthquakes occurred in March near a drilling operation in Poland Township, according to documents requested from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
Cogistix LLC Named to Inc. Magazine’s Top 5,000

Cogistix LLC, a company that resells and codes management software for manufacturers, was recently named to the Inc. magazine's Inc. 5000, placing it among the 5,000 fastest-growing private companies in the nation.
Fred Martin Raises $12K for Angels for Animals

“You’re more beautiful than Marilyn Monroe,” he remarked as he held the pup, a Siberian huskie/German shepherd mix.
Marilyn was among the guests -- canine, feline and human -- for an event Wednesday at Fred Martin Ford Mercedes Benz, during which Martin, president and owner of the dealership, presented a $12,000 check to Angels for Animals.
Ryan Secures $3.6M for Mindfulness Research
Thursday, September 04, 2014WASHINGTON -- A $3.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health will be used to explore whether lifestyle modification can help keep individuals with un-medicated hypertension off antihypertensive medication.
U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-13 Ohio, announced the grant award, from NIH’s National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, to Drs. David Fresco and Joel Hughes of Kent State University and Dr. Jeffrey Greeson of the University of Pennsylvania. The grant will fund a five-year study called Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for High Blood Pressure.
Ohio State Bar President to Honor 5 Lawyers Sept. 16
Thursday, September 04, 2014COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Martin E. Mohler, president of the Ohio State Bar Association, will visit Salem Sept. 16 to recognize the service of five attorneys from Mahoning and Columbiana counties.
Mohler will address the annual luncheon meeting of District 13 of the bar association at the Salem Golf Club. District 13 encompasses 451 lawyers who practice in Columbiana and Mahoning counties.

Pa. Liquor Control Board Reports Record Revenues
Thursday, September 04, 2014HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Revenue at fine wines and spirits stores in Pennsylvania reached $2.24 billion in fiscal 2014, a $67 million, or 3.2% increase compared to fiscal 2013, the state Liquor Control Board reported Wednesday. The board paid a record $526 million in liquor taxes, sales taxes and transfers to the general fund, a year-over-year increase of $13 million.
GM, Cruze Sales Decline, Big Month for Chrysler
Wednesday, September 03, 2014DETROIT -- General Motors Co. dealers delivered 272,423 vehicles in the United States in August, down 1.2% from last August -- the top sales month of 2013, the company reported this morning.
On the positive side, GM saw an 18% increase in truck sales compared to a year ago, a 10% increase in GMC deliveries and a 30% increase in commercial sales.
By comparison, Chrysler Group LLC said its August sales soard 19.8% from August 2013 while Ford Motor Co. said its year-over-year sales fell 0.4% last month.
Dollar General to Open Austintown Store Saturday
Wednesday, September 03, 2014AUSTINTOWN, Ohio – Dollar General Corp., embroiled in a bidding war for rival Family Dollar Stores Inc., will open a new store Saturday at 2002 S. Raccoon Road.
On Tuesday, Dollar General increased its bid for Family Dollar to $9.1 billion and said it would pay a break-up fee of $500 million if concerns over competition blocked the deal, and said it would sell up to 1,500 stores if necessary. It also warned it may appeal directly to shareholders if its bid was rejected.
