Kent State Researchers Win $2.5M in Science Funding
Thursday, July 17, 2014KENT, Ohio – Members of the Kent State University faculty have been awarded nearly $2.5 million in funding from the National Science Foundation for research over the next three years in biology, physics and the science of liquid crystals, the university announced Wednesday.
All faculty investigators have roles planned in the research projects for students -- undergraduate and graduate -- and, in two cases, outreach to area high school students, through research internships, science fairs and Upward Bound college preparation.
Dominion CEO to Address Chamber’s Young 2014
Wednesday, July 16, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Thomas F. Farrell II, president and CEO of Dominion, is among the speakers slated for the Youngstown Ohio Utica Natural Gas 2014 Conference & Expo, scheduled for Sept. 10-11 at the Covelli Centre.
Other speakers planned for Young 2014, which is presented by the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber, include a representative of VAM USA, the chamber announced today. Gov. John Kasich and Sheng-Chun Lin, chairman of CPC Corp. in Taiwan, have been invited to appear as well.
YSUScape to Raise Funds for Mural Project
Wednesday, July 16, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- YSUScape will host a fundraiser 5-9 p.m. Friday at "Nove Gatto" in Erie Terminal Place, 112 Commerce St. downtown. The event aims to raise funds for a beautification and mural project at the former R&S convenience store at Elm Street and Madison Avenue.
YSU students plan to complete the mural this fall.
Brown Testifies Vallourec 'Struggling' to Compete
Wednesday, July 16, 2014WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown called on the International Trade Commission to protect American steel manufacturers and the jobs they support in testimony before the panel Tuesday.
In his testimony, Brown, D-Ohio, told the commission that these unfair trade practices have hurt the competitiveness of Ohio manufacturers and threatened the jobs of their workers. Unfair imports have already resulted in layofsf at JMC Steel in Warren, and even Vallourec’s “state-of-the-art” mill in Youngstown “is struggling to compete against Korean OCTG in the U.S. market,” he testified.
Texas Big Dog Returns with a Taste of China
Wednesday, July 16, 2014WARREN, Ohio -- The mayor and two city councilmen were on hand Tuesday morning to help the owner, a man in black, and his wife cut the ribbon that officially opened Texas Big Dog, a fast-food restaurant with a National Football League theme.
Owner Tom Ducharme’s cowboy hat, the frames of his dark sunglasses, sweater, trousers and rain slicker-style coat were entirely black. Only his cowboy boots made of Australian crocodile leather, sandalwood in color, were not.

Derrick Hart, general manager for Staff Right, Boardman, said many of the positions his company looks to fill are temp-to-hire.
