Professional Women’s Club to Honor Becky Wall
Tuesday, October 14, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Youngstown Business & Professional Women’s Club will honor Becky Dearing Wall, vice president and treasurer of Dearing Compressor & Pump Co. as its Woman of the Year Tuesday, Oct. 21 at Antone’s Banquet Center, Boardman.
Recognition of Dearing is part of the organization’s observance of National Business Women’s Week, says Lisa Dickson, past president of the organization. Wall was chosen this year’s recipient because of her role in the growth and profitability Dearing Compressor, Boardman, has achieved since 2005.
Manufacturing Tech Orders Down in August
Tuesday, October 14, 2014McLEAN, Va. -- U.S. manufacturing technology orders in August totaled $356.7 million, up 0.4% but down from a year earlier, AMT -- The Association for Manufacturing Technology reports. In August 2013, technology orders totaled $379.3 million.
For the year so far, technology orders stand at nearly $3.1 billion, down 2.4% compared with 2013. The numbers are based on data reported by companies participating in the United States Manufacturing Technology Orders program.
Lost Medals of World War II Hero: Part I
Tuesday, October 14, 2014POLAND, Ohio -- All four of the seniors who ran the mile relay on the 1937 state championship track team at Poland High School volunteered to serve in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
Frank Powers, the quick starter, Jack Johnson and Robert Barton, who ran the second and third legs, returned after the war. The anchorman, Anthony Baird Mitchell, did not. Mitchell lost his life Sept. 18, 1944, in a mission over Nazi-occupied Holland as he returned from a supply drop to the 101st Airborne Division not far from the bridge at Arnheim (the “Bridge Too Far”).
Lost Medals, Part II: Mystery Partially Solved
Tuesday, October 14, 2014POLAND, Ohio -- Part of the mystery has been solved of how Army Air Force Capt. Anthony Baird Mitchell’s medals ended up for sale on the website of a dealer of military memorabilia in Toronto, Canada.
In the MidSeptember edition of The Business Journal was the account of how Michael Leone, a dentist in Boardman and amateur historian, acquired Mitchell’s medals for bravery during World War II and other personal effects (CLICK HERE to read story).

Restaurant Customers Consuming Fewer Calories
Tuesday, October 14, 2014WASHINGTON -- Restaurant chains are reducing the number of calories in many of their menu items, a new study finds. The report, by researchers at the department of health policy and management at Johns Hopkins University, looked at the calories in the items served at more than 60 large U.S. chain restaurants including Chipotle, Wendy’s and Applebee’s Bar & Grill.
Overall, the menu items that the chain restaurants introduced in 2013 had 12% fewer calories than items in 2012, the report found. Calories in new children’s items dropped a significant 20%.

Traficant's Champions Question How He Died
Monday, October 13, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- That didn’t take long. When a larger-than-life political figure like Jim Traficant unexpectedly dies, conspiracy theories always follow -- and this one is off and running on the Internet.
American Free Press, the virulent far-right organization that promotes itself as “your underground source for uncensored news,” posted an article Oct. 11 with this headline: “Was Jim Traficant Murdered?”
Traficant died Sept. 27 at age 73 from injuries he suffered Sept. 23 in a tractor accident at his family’s farm in Greenford.
