Dual Major in Foreign Languages Boosts Grads
Monday, June 30, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Fluency in a foreign language greatly improves a college senior’s chances of getting a job for which he is qualified, especially if he wants a position in, or related to, international business.
Eighty-two percent of all seniors proficient in a foreign language find employment before or soon after graduation, according to the foreign languages department of Youngstown State University.
Consumers Opening Up Wallets for 4th of July
Monday, June 30, 2014NEW YORK -- More than 153 million Americans will spend $6.2 billion to observe the Fourth of July, the National Retail Federation estimates based on its Independence Day survey.
They will spend of $68.16 per household on average on food. This is the first year the federation asked about spending plans on food items.
While the majority will spend the day around a picnic table, many will also attend a fireworks display or community celebration (105 million) or a parade (27 million).
Summer Festival July 10-13 in Youngstown

Organizers from YSU, the city, Mahoning County Convention & Visitors Bureau, St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and Eric Ryan Productions are sponsoring the weekend.

Ohio Joins US Chamber’s All*Vet States Website

Goal of the site is to showcase states working to create economic opportunities for veterans and military spouses and to highlight the resources available to military families making the transition to civilian life.
WRPA Hires Law Firm to Protect Its ‘Interest’
Saturday, June 28, 2014VIENNA TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- The Western Reserve Port Authority’s board of directors is hiring legal counsel to resist any attempt by commissioners in Mahoning and Trumbull counties to dissolve the body.
During a special meeting Friday afternoon, four of the five remaining members of the port authority’s board of directors voted to retain the law firm of Eckert, Seamans, Cherin and Mellott LLC as special counsel to the port authority’s attorney on an “as-needed basis,” as determined by the port authority’s chairman and counsel, at an rate not to exceed $350 per hour.
Technology Changes How YCAR Delivers Services
Friday, June 27, 2014BOARDMAN, Ohio -- As the economy continues to improve and the real estate market along with it, more individuals are becoming real estate agents, as reflected by the rising number of members in the Youngstown Columbiana Association of Realtors.
As of June 10, membership in the organization stands at 537, up from 511 a year earlier, says the CEO of YCAR, Jessica Perry. Thirty members have been installed during the tenure of this year’s president, Charley Althof, a licensed real estate agent since 1976, she adds.
Halcon Sticking with Its Existing Utica Well Sites
Friday, June 27, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Halcon Resources Corp. hasn't altogether abandoned its holdings in the Utica shale, according to records from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
Data provided by the Pennsylvania DEP show that Halcon was awarded a new permit June 20 to drill a new vertical well at the Gallagher property in Greene Township in Mercer County.
Meantime, ODNR issued a permit last week to Halcon so it can complete its Lutz 1H well in Trumbull County in Warren Township, according to the agency's website.
