WCI Steel Reaches Tentative Pact with Steelworkers Union
Thursday, April 15, 2004By Dan O'BrienWARREN, Ohio -- WCI Steel Inc. has reached a tentative labor agreement with the United Steelworkers of America, an integral piece of a restructuring plan the company is pursuing through U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Akron.WCI spokesman Tim Roberts reports the accord was reached last night with Local 1375, which represents some 1,400 hourly workers at the plant. The agreement is expected to be signed by officials over the next several days. Once that is completed, the agreement will be placed before Local 1375 for ratification.
Timken Secures Significant Order from India Mill
Thursday, April 15, 2004CANTON, Ohio -- The Timken Co. has received a significant bearing order from India-based Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. The order, worth more than $700,000 (USD), calls for Timken to provide Jindal Steel's Raigarh plant with two types of cylindrical roller bearings. Sponge iron facilities utilize a mixture of iron ore and coal to feed into an electric furnace for melting and steel making. This process is an alternative to the more commonly used raw material of scrap steel, says said J. P.

Spring in the Air Puts Spring in Retailers' Steps
Thursday, April 15, 2004WASHINGTON -- The first quarter of 2004 ended with a bang for the nation's retailers. According to the National Retail Federation, March retail sales in the GAFS category (general merchandise stores, clothing and clothing accessories stores, furniture and home furnishings stores, electronics and appliances stores, and sporting goods, hobby, book and music stores) rose 8.2% over last year and increased 0.6% adjusted over February. GAFS sales for the first quarter rose 9.8%."March saw strong sales increases across the board," said Rosalind Wells, NRF chief economist.

The April Money/ICR poll has found that three-quarters of Americans say that if they had had a choice between enacting the 2003 tax cuts or spending additional money to create new jobs, they would have picked job creation. The national poll, fielded last week, also found that half of all Americans would also have preferred cutting the deficit over last year's tax cuts.
Deloitte Predicts Drop in Spending Growth

Wednesday, April 14, 2004LONDON -- Television broadcasters are losing millions of viewers to broadband Internet services, according to new research from Strategy Analytics. In a recent survey of 800 European broadband users across seven countries, 56% said they were spending less or a lot less time watching television since subscribing to broadband. Broadband users also are spending less time with other traditional media, such as printed publications and radio, the research found.
