Aqua Ohio to Invest $1.6M in Struthers, Masury Districts"
STRUTHERS, Ohio -- Aqua Ohio Inc. (formerly Consumers Ohio Water Co.) announced today it will invest $1.6 million on infrastructure improvements in its Struthers and Masury divisions, which serve more than 74,000 people throughout Mahoning and Trumbull counties. Aqua Ohio says its capital program is consistent with the type of improvements the federal government is requiring of the country's aging drinking water systems. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. water systems need about $150 billion in repairs to pipes, tanks, valves and treatment plants over the next 20 years. Projects planned this year for the Struthers and Masury districts include:More than $300,000 for treatment and security improvements, repairs and back up power at Aqua Ohio's water treatment plant in Poland.$200,000 toward a $2 million rehabilitation of Hamilton Lake dam in Struthers, scheduled for completion in 2005.$100,000 to replace 1,900 feet of water main on Elm Street and Stevenson Road in Masury.Approximately $1 million for the company's on-going program of replacing aging mains, valves, fire hydrants, meters and service lines. "Our goal is to replace and rehabilitate the older parts of our system in a timely fashion," said Albert J. Sauline, district vice president. "This ongoing investment is necessary to increase system reliability and maintain a quality product that meets or outperforms all federal and state drinking standards."Aqua Ohio recently invested more than $318,000 toward a five-mile waterline on Western Reserve Road, Tippecanoe Road and Summit Drive in Boardman and Canfield townships, Sauline noted. "We partnered with Mahoning County on this $1.4 million project that will bring much-needed fire protection to both residential and commercial properties in what we consider a potential high-growth area," he said. "It is already paving the way for residential and commercial growth along the Tippecanoe/Route 224 corridor." The balance of the project will be funded through a $563,000 State Issue 2 grant secured by Mahoning County, and $150,000 from county sales tax revenue set aside for economic development and participating developers.Aqua Ohio Inc., Ohio's largest investor-owned water utility, serves nearly 288,000 people in 49 communities in eight counties.
