Akron U. Community and Technical College Renamed
AKRON, Ohio -- The University of Akron's Community and Technical College has taken its next step in expanding its role as Summit County's only community college by adopting a new name -- Summit College.The university's board of trustees approved renaming the college, which has been joined with the Division of Workforce Development and Continuing Education. Plans to combine the two entities have been under way since December, when trustees approved a resolution to conduct academic and curricular planning for the new Summit College.The changes to Summit College will tie it more closely to the needs of job seekers and lifelong learners throughout the region, according to Dean Stanley Silverman. "Summit College will be defined by a mix of traditional and cutting-edge academic programs that are responsive to changing student needs and market demands," Silverman says. "It will help create an educated workforce that is ready to contribute to economic growth both regionally and statewide."The college will continue to offer 24 associate and seven bachelor's degrees and to encourage associate degree students to continue their studies toward a bachelor's degree at the University. Workforce development programs will be designed to fit the needs of area businesses.Summit College is expected to enroll its first entering students for fall semester 2005.Trustees approved a new bachelor of science degree in respiratory therapy technology in Summit College and a science, mathematics and technology cchool concept proposal by the College of Education. Representatives from the college, in collaboration with the Akron Public Schools, the National Inventors Hall of Fame and the city of Akron, drafted the proposal to outline the potential of a partnership that can serve as a model for middle-school science, mathematics and technology teaching and learning.Visit The University of Akron: www.uakron.edu"
