$250,000 Will Help Airport Reach for the Sky"
WASHINGTON -- A $250,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation will be used to help market the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport and attract new passenger service, reported U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan (D-17, Ohio). Youngstown, Ryan said, was one of more than 100 applicants to submit a proposal and one of only 46 to receive an award. Mahoning and Trumbull Counties are contributing a local match of $25,000 to the marketing program and the Western Reserve Port Authority will contribute $10,000. Another $60,000 will come from private donations and in-kind contributions, said Ryan, who submitted a letter of support for the funding to the department in May. "This is a huge shot in the arm for our airport, and I'm proud this effort has paid off in such a big way," he noted. "A quarter million dollars will go a long way towards helping our community market this airport and attract new passenger service."In addition to being an integral part of the Youngstown Air Reserve Station, the Youngstown Airport can be a powerful economic engine for the Mahoning Valley and northeast Ohio," Ryan continued. "My office and the local community have always been committed to the success of our airport, and this grant shows that the federal government will be a partner in that effort."The Department of Transportation funds were awarded under the Small Community Air Service Development Program, the goal of which is to help small communities address air service problems associated with insufficient service and high airfares, Ryan said.Related Stories:Vacation Express to Stop Service from Regional AirportFuture of Vacation Express at Regional Airport 'Under Review'"
