Silk Road Market Hosts Seedling Giveaway Saturday
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Silk Road Market, North Market Street, will give away free tree seedlings Saturday, owner Wendy Farmerie says. The first 100 people to arrive can choose among Winterberry, Eastern Redbud and Flowering Dogwood seedlings, each averaging in size from 8 to 15 feet tall.
Doors open at 10 a.m.
Grown from seed collected in forests in Pennsylvania, the seedlings come from Howard Nursery, a division of the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Howard Nursery grows and ships millions of seedlings each year, Farmerie says. Also on hand will be Flat Larry, mascot of the Lawrence County Tourist Promotion Agency. Anyone who stops in the Silk Road Market Saturday may receive his stamped Passport to Lawrence County.
“We all need to do our part to preserve the environment, and planting trees can be a big part of that," Farmerie says. "I wanted to provide an opportunity for people to plant a tree seedling that wouldn’t cost a thing. Not only will the tree provide beauty and environmental benefits once it matures, but it’s also a great activity to do with a child.”
The Silk Road Market was founded in 2006 to provide a local source for handcrafted items that are fair-trade certified. Fair-trade certification guarantees that the artisans receive fair wages and work in safe conditions.
