Ryan Goes Off on GOP, Gaveled 'Out of Order'
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-13 Ohio, Thursday leveled a sharp attack against Republicans in Congress, blaming them for the government shutdown as he became visibly angry and accused the majority in the House of Representatives of “wrapping yourselves in the flag” but not following the democratic process.
The Democrat began by questioning the Republicans wanting to restore funding to reopen the World War II memorial but not to make sure every child who has cancer has access to care. "Isn't that what they fought and died for -- justice for all and health care justice for all," he said.
Ryan drew parallels with Republicans’ insistence that any federal spending plan they authorize not include money to implement the Affordable Care Act and his own opposition to the Iraq War a decade ago. The impasse has shut down federal government operations except those essential to national security and safety.
“I was against the Iraq War. The Iraq War was unaffordable. The Iraq War was unpopular -- 58% of the American people were against the Iraq War. Democrats didn’t shut down the government,” Ryan argued.
“Use the political process,” he shouted. “We did and won the House back in 2006 and won the presidency in 2008.”
Ryan was told two times that his allotted time to speak, one minute, had expired, then was gaveled “out of order, out of order,” and had his microphone cut off.
The exchange, cablecast live on CSpan at 12:35 p.m., was uploaded by Ryan’s office to the congressman’s YouTube page. CLICK HERE to view Ryan's YouTube posting.
