Or, they could be eligible for new health insurance on the Health Insurance Marketplace – and financial help from the government toward the cost of premiums might be available.
The Affordable Care Act requires that most Americans obtain health insurance this year or pay a tax penalty. The penalty will be applied to one’s annual taxable income for each month after March 31 he lacks health insurance.March 31 ia the last day to enroll.
“This is where Northside Medical Center and Trumbull Memorial Hospital can help the uninsured in our community,” says Stephanie Martin, central business office director at ValleyCare Health System of Ohio. “With many people lacking access to a computer or who just need help maneuvering through the enrollment website, our application counselors can help. We can assist individuals and their families evaluate the available health plans and determine if they’re eligible for Medicaid or other insurance options."
All health plans on the marketplace must offer a comprehensive set of benefits and individuals cannot be denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition. Among the available health benefits include preventive care and wellness services, doctor visits, prescription drugs, hospital and emergency department care, lab services and pediatric services, Martin noted.
Ohio chose to expand Medicaid coverage beginning last January. This expansion will increase eligibility limits for adults to 138% of the Federal Poverty Income Level (equivalent to one person’s annual income of about $15,900). This will open Medicaid coverage to a new population, including childless adults.
