Insurance Department to Help with Medicare Open Enrollment
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program is available to help older residents of the state assess their options during Medicare’s annual enrollment period that runs through Dec. 7. Coverage takes effect Jan. 1.
“Open enrollment provides Ohioans with a great opportunity to review coverage and benefits and identify the plan best suited to meet their unique needs,” said Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor, also director of the Ohio Department of Insurance, in a prepared statement. “Our staff can help consumers and their families go through the evaluation process as they select a plan for 2014.”
The information program helped nearly 40,000 Ohioans save a record $5.5 million during last year’s enrollment period, Taylor said. Before the start of this year’s open enrollment, the program has helped Ohioans with Medicare save $9 million since the beginning of 2013.
Taylor urged Ohioans to contact the program with their Medicare questions and for help. In addition, free “Medicare check-ups” are being held in every county to help people review changes to Medicare and determine their best coverage. A list of check-up events is available online.
Those with Medicare questions and in need of enrollment help can call the program office at 800 686 1578.
