YSU Trustees Prepare to Raise Tuition 2.4% to 3%
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Undergraduate students at Youngstown State University should expect to see a tuition hike of 2.4% next fall while graduate students should prepare for a 3% increase.
The finance and facilities committee of the YSU Board of Trustees approved the increases Thursday and the full board will vote on its recommendation March 12.
A spokesman for YSU pointed out that tuition there will remain the lowest among the 11 public comprehensive universities in Ohio even with the hike. The increases are projected to raise $2 million in additional revenues.
Full-time undergraduate students who reside in Ohio will see an increase of $94 per semester to $4,043, or $8,088 a year. The state average for fiscal 2015 is projected to be $9,708, says YSU budget director Neal McNally, or $1,620 above what YSU will charge.
The most expensive public school in Ohio is Miami University; it will charge $13,936 in tuition for the year, or $5,849 more than YSU.
Graduate student tuition will increase $158 per semester to $5,440 for in-state full-time students and $5,561 per semester for those who qualify for Affordable Tuition Advantage, or reduced tuition program, for out-of-state students. Most of them are from 16 counties in western Pennsylvania, four counties in West Virginia and one county in western New York State. The other out-of-state graduate students will be charged $7,046 per semester.
Undergraduate tuition for students residing in the 21 counties will be $6,950 per semester.
The state Legislature funds only 25% of the public university budgets, the university spokesman noted. Ten years ago, the state contributed half of YSU’s annual budget.
