TCTC Broadcast News Team Wins Championship
WARREN, Ohio -- Trumbull Career & Technical Center’s broadcast news team, which consists of juniors in the interactive multimedia program, is a national champion.
Earlier this month, the team took first-place honors at the Business Professionals of America 2013 National Leadership Conference, “Uncover Your Magic,” at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla.
They joined more than 5,000 other conference delegates from across the nation to participate in national-level business skills competitions, workshops, general sessions, and the national officer candidate campaigns and elections.
For the final judging, the broadcast news team was handed 30 stories pulled from the Associated Press wire and given two hours to prepare a three-minute news presentation, live on camera, before the judges.
“The conference is the culmination of a school year’s worth of business education and technology training that members of the local chapter of Business Professionals of America at TCTC have received,” said Maureen Martin, chapter adviser.
Team members are Chandler Hodges, Justin Habraken, Ian Roberts, and Chris Taylor. Kristofer Doran, instructor and adviser, called their effort "an extraordinary accomplishment. For four juniors to come out first in the nation shows the work and effort they put together as a team.”
TCTC’s video production team, made up of Sarah Ellis, Jalon Lee, Frank Carsone, and Brianna Kester, placed in the Top 12 in their competition and Cassie Wagoner won a sixth place for her presentation in the digital media production competition.
Eligibility to compete at the national level was based on winning at the regional level last January, with career and tech schools from Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties competing, and then placing among the top two in state competition in April.
These TCTC students also qualified to attend the conference (MM refers to the interactive multimedia program and WD refers to the Web design and application development program):
- Extemporaneous speech: Carter Brady (MM)
- Human resources management: Alex Klejka (WD)
- Prepared speech: Brian Howard (MM)
